4 Tips To Stay Warm When Your Furnace Fails

It happens at the worst time. Outside, the weather is cold and blustery; Inside, where you expect to find heat and comfort, a chill has settled over your home because the furnace has failed. After you call the repair service, how do you stay warm until help arrives? Follow these tips to stay comfortable.

Use A Heating Pad

If you're worried about the cost of using electric heaters to warm an entire room or home, you can focus on keeping your body warm instead. A heating pad is a great way to warm up, and the device uses very little electricity. When using a heating pad, always keep a layer of cloth between the heating pad and your skin to prevent burns and irritation. Most heating pads have a covering for this reason.

Don't Depend On Hot Drinks

There's nothing like a steaming cup of hot chocolate to warm up, right? Not so fast! That hot mug of chocolate goodness may have the opposite effect instead. A receptor on the tongue, the TRPV1 receptor, causes the body to turn on mechanisms to cool off. And the body's cooling mechanisms exceed the drink's ability to heat your body, causing you to cool down instead of warm up. Conversely, icy drinks can cause you to shiver, an action that warms up the body. On the other hand, shivering is never comfortable, so you may want to enjoy an iced beverage after your furnace is fixed.

Avoid Alcohol

People once thought that drinking alcohol could warm you up on a cold winter's day. It's understandable, considering that alcohol gives your skin a flushed feeling as blood vessels dilate, moving blood away from your core and toward the surface of the skin. However, this movement of blood to the skin lowers your core body temperature. Consuming alcohol also increases your risk for hypothermia by preventing your body from shivering. The last thing you want to do when the heat is out is reach for the bottle of whiskey in the liquor cabinet.

Get Moving

Staying active can help you stay warm when your house is chilly. The trick is staying active enough to keep the muscles and core warm without getting too hot. You don't want to work up a sweat, because that will cause you to cool down in a hurry. Normal activities such as cleaning and playing with the children or pets are enough to get your blood pumping.

By using personal warming devices, avoiding drinks that make you cold and moving around more, you should be able to stay warm until the repair service arrives, even in chilly conditions. However, if temperatures are approaching freezing and you have no backup sources of heat, stay with a relative, friend or neighbor until your furnace is repaired.
